New to Kilmer? Here’s What YOU Need to Know

Shifting Gears

Shifting Gears is a fun and interactive summer transition program designed to help rising 7th graders adjust to life at Kilmer Middle School. Students will meet new classmates, explore the campus, and participate in activities that ease the transition into middle school.

 

Available Sessions:

  • Session 1: Thursday, August 13 | 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • Session 2: Thursday, August 13 | 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Session 3: Friday, August 14 | 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

 

If you would like your student to participate, please click the link below. Students may attend only one session. Transportation will be available from our local elementary schools. More details will be shared a week before the sessions start. The cost of the program is $20. The registration fee covers instructional expenses, lunch, and a Kilmer t-shirt. If you would like to inquire about financial assistance, please contact Phil Prevost at pmprevost@fcps.edu.


The preferred method of payment is through the FCPS online payment site, “myschoolbucks.com” in the School Store section of your child’s elementary school, under "7th grade orientation, Kilmer MS".


If your child did not attend a FCPS elementary school, then a check made payable to “Kilmer Middle School” can be made and sent to the front office c/o Shifting Gears program.

KIlmer Open House

Date: Thursday, August 20, 2026

Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

 

During the Kilmer Open House, students will receive their class schedules and locker assignments. They can pick up their FCPS-assigned laptops, walk the halls of the school, and locate their classroom room before the first day of school. Families have the opportunity to meet school staff, counselors, and teachers.

 

Families will have the opportunity stop by the PTA table to Join the 2026-2027 PTA, and purchase spirit wear items. 

 

 

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

Date: Thursday, September 17, 2026

Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

 

During Kilmer’s Back to School Night, parents and guardians will follow their child’s class schedule, and have the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers, learn about the curriculum, and understand course expectations for the year. Note: Students do NOT attend this event.

ATTENDANCE REPORTING

There are three ways to report if your student will be absent. Find out more on Kilmer’s Attendance Reporting page.

 

 

SUPPLIES LIST

A general list of school supplies is recommended for the start of the school year. Teacher will share any additional supplies needed for course-specific requirements during the first week of school. Students will have until September 8 to bring in those extra items. If you need assistance obtaining school supplies and/or a backpack, please contact our Family Liaison, Mabel Morales, at mvmorales@fcps.edu.

  • One 3-ring binder (3 inches or more)\

  • Dividers

  • Single-Subject Composition Notebook (8th grade only)

  • Pens (blue, black)

  • Sharpened #2 pencils with erasers

  • Colored Pencils

  • 2 packs of index cards

  • 2 Highlighters

  • 3 Large Unscented Glue Sticks

  • 4 Black Dry erase markers

  • 1 Dry erase eraser

  • Compass kit (Geometry only)
  • Calculator: Math teachers will communicate calculator information during the first week of school

     

 

BUSES

Student bus information will be available in SIS StudentVue in August. FCPS Transportation coordinates all information regarding bus routes, stops, and rider status.

 

To keep track of bus arrivals and delays, you can download the “Here Comes the Bus” App from the App Store or Google Play. The Kilmer school code is 28982.
